The first compliance deadline for state and local building performance standards has passed for several jurisdictions, including New York City, Boston and St. Louis. In New York City, compliance has been strong, the city reported. Other cities haven’t yet reported their results.
Meanwhile, several municipalities and some states have made regulatory updates to their standards. California released its draft strategy for implementing the standards while Cambridge, Massachusetts, finalized regulations related to using renewable energy credits purchased through contracts. Washington, D.C., pushed back compliance for buildings under 50,000 square feet while keeping deadlines in place for larger buildings, among other updates.
In addition to New York City, several cities, including Philadelphia and St. Louis, have entered into the second compliance cycles of their building energy performance programs. And many, including Seattle and Austin, Texas, have entered into partnerships with utilities and other entities to provide incentives or support for compliance.
