One of the consequences of the Amazon Web Services outage on Monday, which crippled companies’ operations across the globe, was a bad night’s sleep for people who own IoT-enabled Eight Sleep beds — or who spent the night in hotels that offer them.
Eight Sleep launched in 2014 offering cloud-controlled mattresses that allow users to customize the angle at which they sleep and the temperature of their sheets and pillows, play white noise and make other adjustments to help them get a good night’s sleep. That’s until the cloud computing platform the company relies on goes down.
“The AWS outage … impacted some of our users … disrupting their sleep,” the company’s co-founder and CEO, Matteo Franceschetti,” said on X the day after the outage. “That is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologize for it.”
Customers who were awakened in the middle of the night might appreciate Franceschetti’s apology.
“People reported being awoken in discomfort by beds that locked in an upright incline, became unbearably warm, blinked flashing lights or even sounded a wake-up alarm,” the Washington Post reported.
At least two hotels promote their use of the beds: Hotel Figueroa in Los Angeles and the Equinox Hotel in New York City.
“Experience unparalleled comfort with your own … intelligent Eight Sleep mattress that ensures your ideal sleep temperature,” the Hotel Figueroa says on its website.
“Unlock your full potential with The Sleep Lab room,” the Equinox Hotel says on its website. “Leveraging innovative sleep technologies and features, including the Eight Sleep Adaptive Mattress, The Sleep Lab room is designed to maximize recovery, optimize regeneration, and enhance peak performance.”
Neither hotel immediately responded to a request for comment.
“Would be great if my bed wasn’t stuck in an inclined position,” an X user said following Franceschetti’s post. “Cmon now.”
“It … still seems to be turning on and off randomly,” another X user said.
“All the features should be working,” Franceschetti said at 10:32 Monday night.
Everyone can sleep well now.
