The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last week awarded Johnson Controls a $377.9 million contract for the procurement, installation, maintenance and service of its Metasys building automation systems. The contract, set to begin August 1, includes a 24-month optional ordering period that would potentially bring the total value of the contract to $630 million, according to the award notice. Johnson Controls was the sole bidder for the contract.
The three-year contract will provide HVAC, utility monitoring and control systems, supervisory control and data acquisition, and other automated control systems to the U.S. Department of Defense, according to the award notice. These additional automated control systems include fire alarm safety; contamination detection, filtration, and response; electronic security; and electric, gas and water metering.
Last year, Johnson Controls released updates to its Metasys building control and automation system that bolstered the software with analytics tools, increased security features and simplified administration that can move facilities closer to autonomous operations, the company said.
Metasys 14.0 features airside and waterside HVAC applications based on ASHRAE Guideline 36, High-Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems.
“Today’s building landscape, its technologies and challenges are evolving at a rapid pace,” Babak Haghayeghi, product management director of building automation systems, global products, at Johnson Controls, told Facilities in an email last year. “While a periodic release is updated with new features and capabilities to respond to those changes and challenges, operators must wait for the release date to access them.”
“In comparison, a continual release model makes it possible for operators to access the latest technologies and advancements as soon as they are developed. This on-demand access can help ensure a building’s BAS can evolve in time with the industry, helping facilities gain a competitive advantage,” Haghayeghi said.
