States and municipalities across the United States have enacted regulations requiring building owners to meet building performance standards. These standards require owners to track and report their property’s energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions and, in some cases, to meet performance targets.
From New York City and St. Louis, which have their first compliance reporting deadlines in 2025, to Seattle and Montgomery County, Maryland, which enter their first compliance periods later this decade, jurisdictions are creating mandates for commercial and public buildings.
This tracker reports on building performance standards and benchmarking requirements for states and municipalities with populations of 100,000 or more. For each jurisdiction, the tracker identifies what to track and report on and, where relevant, performance targets to meet.
